The weekend before Christmas, we got hit by the same storm that gave Washington DC two feet of snow. We ended up getting about seven inches in total, which is a massive blizzard in Winston-Salem. The great thing about living in a town that is ill-prepared for snow is that the whole town shuts down. Sure, that can be somewhat annoying if you need to get somewhere, but it is a dream come true for kids. No school, no traffic, all fun. Most of the roads are not plowed, so they become playgrounds. Hilly streets become sledding Meccas; it is awesome.
Mary Grace has seen snow before, but has never had the chance to really enjoy it. Molly had the foresight to buy a sled once the snow hit our local weather forecast, so we were ready when the flakes began to fall. The one thing we didn't have were proper snow clothes for Mary Grace, so we put her in the sled and walked to the local ski shop to remedy the situation. We walked out with Mary Grace's first snow suit. It is a little big on her, so she'll be able to use it next year as well. It is a good thing to have, as we live only an hour from some decent skiing in Boone.
Mary Grace took a little while to warm up to the snow, but as soon as she realized its potential, she began to have a good time. We built a snowman in Geegee and Poppie's front yard, made snow cream and went sledding on the biggest hills in town. Mary Grace is officially a daredevil. I was certain that she would be too scared to sled down some of the steeper hills we chose, but she never showed the slightest hint of fear. She just demanded that we go faster.
